'We feel betrayed'

I respond to recent letters from people who support the frightening decision by Flintshire councillors to allow the planned kiln-incinerator to go ahead at Castle Cement in Padeswood.

This was against the planning officer's advice and against county procedure.

The manager of Castle Cement called the protestors 'scaremongers'. Yes, we are scared of the probable fallout of toxins, however small.

There is worldwide concern about the safety of burning tyres let alone other poisonous substances.

The councillors listened to the company and were won over without giving the many protestors a chance to be heard. We feel betrayed by our only representatives, the councillors.

Of course, cement production is important. Nobody denies that but it is the way it is to be done that is in question.

The factory will be automated and, as already reported, 50 jobs will be lost anyway. So balance about 100 jobs against the possible danger to the health of thousands in the surrounding counties.

In fairness to the company, it must believe that it will be safe but it cannot guarantee this. While there is any doubt everyone should do their best to stop the building of this incinerator-kiln before it is too late.

A similar request was turned down in South Wales due to scientific evidence and public pressure.

Very little has been said about the 70 lorries per day caarrying these dangerous substances on our roads.

It is beyond comprehension how this project could be passed against all the odds and the huge opposition.
