CYNICAL MANOEUVRE TO EXPLOIT COMMUNITIES

Reproduced from The Chester Chronicle, Mold & Buckley Edition 21 January 2000

I was surprised to read in last week's paper two separate items from teachers objecting in very similar language against the right of residents to protest about the plans of Castle Cement to build a toxic waste incinerator at Padeswood.

In reference to protest groups 'spouting rubbish' on the subject, this is what the plant will be doing.

This is not a fair description of reasoned arguements from knowledgeable people concerned that the health of residents may be adversely affected by these proposals.

The comments from North Wales Health Authority's Dr Roberts neglected to explain that no health surveys have been conducted in the area.

On what does he base his reassurances?

It is noteworthy that a number of national companies have expressed their unwillingness to expose their own workers to the 'improvements' Castle Cement have in mind and that they will not be investing in the area if the plan proceeds.

If Castle Cement is allowed  to build this waste disposal facility, the companies producing the polluting materials from which the alternative 'fuel' is derived will have no incentive to clean up their acts.

Waste disposal companies will import more of the stuff and the European master of Castle Cement will laugh all the way to the bank.

Conventional cement manufacture equals low profits. Toxic waste disposal in cememnt kilns equals tonnes of dosh.

This plan is a cynical manoeuvre to exploit our communities and if the above teachers are really concerned about the children of the area I suggest they become the 101st and 102nd members of CANK, actively opposing the application, or join the thousands of residents who have written to councillors objecting against a very dangerous industrial process.
