CANK's FEBRUARY 2000 NEWSLETTER
Campaign Against the New Kiln
Castle Cement's Application to
construct a New Kiln
was called-in by the National
Assembly of Wales
on February 14th
Thank you to all the people who have been so active in so many ways in the past few weeks. Your combined efforts, some publicly and some less publicly behind the scenes, have quite literally forced the hand of the National Assembly of Wales.
On Monday, February 14th, the Assembly 'called-in' Castle Cement's planning application for a new kiln. This means that the application will now, almost certainly, be examined in a public inquiry by an Inspector appointed to take evidence for the Assembly. Whilst formal notification of an inquiry has not yet been received, we are advised by the Assembly that they intend to hold one.
The Planning Section will soon send out an 'Issues Letter' stating the matters upon which the Assembly wish to be informed. This is essentially the agenda for the public inquiry. The Inspector's report will then be considered by a panel of Assembly Members, selected from the Planning Committee. For reasons of neutrality, they will be A.Ms. from other areas.
We will keep you all informed about the decision and the probable timetable leading up to the eventual outcome. We are looking at a timescale that could be around 18 months, from today to publication of the Inspector's report.

The public inquiry will be the crucial event.
We would like to involve all our
local communities. Public Inquiries are, by their very nature, costly.
If you or your community would
like to assist in fund raising, we would be very grateful.
